PROGRAM SUMMARY

The CCO Opus Academy is a concert production training program transforming early-career composers into the next generation of artistic leaders and community building strategists. Four selected participants will compose new works, create and manage a concert of their own chamber music, and attend seminars and presentations by industry professionals, gaining hands on experience in event planning, digital marketing, public communications and brand development. The goal of the program is to train individual composers to mount and sustain their own concerts, and discover alternative methods of presenting their music to the public.

APPLICATION

The Canadian Composers Orchestra is seeking four early-career composers of any race or gender to form a concert production team. Composers should be based in or around Toronto, and must submit two existing acoustic works of any instrumentation with a cover letter expressing their interest in the program. In addition to composing a new chamber piece, participants will be assigned one of four roles: art direction, marketing & outreach, house manager, and artist manager, and will work closely with Andrew James Clark and each other to bring about a successful public event. Team meetings and career-building sessions will take place on Zoom, while rehearsals and workshops will be in-person. Participants must attend. The program length is six to nine months.

SELECTION PROCESS

Four composers will be selected by a small committee who will assess the quality of the applicant's notated musical scores and cover letter. Participants may specify which of the four team roles they are most interested in and why. Prior experience in similar roles will be seen as an asset. The selected composers will be expected to remain in communication with the Andrew James Clark throughout the program and must be present in Toronto for workshops and the final concert. The dates of these events have not yet been decided.

FINANCE

There is participation fee for this program.
